You only pay once your sharp knives are back in your hand.
Home methods — pull-through sharpeners, honing steels, even most whetstones — maintain or temporarily improve an edge, but they don't restore it. A pull-through sharpener removes material aggressively and unevenly, often shortening a knife's life. A steel realigns an edge but can't fix one that's genuinely dull. Professional sharpening re-establishes the correct bevel angle using the type of equipment knife manufacturers use to finish blades before they leave the factory — precision grinding wheels and tooling that costs thousands of dollars and makes no sense for a single household to own. The technique matters, but so do the tools: together, they produce a true, clean edge from heel to tip that lasts 3–4 times longer than typical at-home sharpening, and it's significantly better for the long-term condition of your knives.
It depends on how much you cook. For a household that cooks most nights, once a month keeps your knives in excellent condition. Frequent cooks — people who cook daily or prep large meals — tend to prefer biweekly. If you're not sure, monthly is a safe starting point and you can always adjust. One thing to know: the longer you wait between sharpenings, the more material has to be removed to restore the edge, which means slightly more wear on the knife over its lifetime. Regular maintenance is always better for the blade than occasional rescue sharpening.

Your cooking routine doesn't pause for a single meal. This is probably the most common concern people have before signing up, and the one that surprises them most once they try it.
Most standard kitchen knives — chef's knives, santokus, paring knives, bread knives, carving knives, single-bevel Japanese knives, and similar. We also sharpen scissors for an additional charge. We don't sharpen serrated knives (other than bread knives with a standard serration). If you're unsure about a specific knife, just ask when you book.
Yes — every sharpening removes a small amount of metal, which is unavoidable. But professional equipment is calibrated to remove only what's necessary at precisely the right angle, minimising material loss per session. Home methods — particularly pull-through sharpeners — tend to be far more aggressive and less precise, removing more metal for a worse result. Done correctly and at the right frequency, a quality knife will last decades of professional sharpening. What actually shortens a knife's life is infrequent sharpening using blunt-force home methods, or simply using a dull knife with excessive force.
Monthly is $29/mo (up to 6 knives, one visit per month). Biweekly is $49/mo (up to 6 knives, two visits per month — billed as a single monthly charge). A one-time visit is $39 (up to 5 knives). No charge at booking — we save your card and charge automatically 3 days after your first pickup. Extra knives beyond your plan limit are $10 each; scissors are $15. Nothing else.
Not a problem. Many of our customers leave their knives in a bag at the door or in an agreed spot. Just let us know in your booking notes. For drop-off, we'll place your returned knives at the same location and send you a notification. Once knives are left at your door, they're considered in your possession from that point — so make sure the spot is secure.
Yes, anytime before your pick-up through your account — no phone call needed, no fee. If you need to cancel a subscription, that's just as easy: cancel in your account and no further visits will be scheduled. We don't believe in locking people in.
In the rare event we cause damage during sharpening, we'll make it right — up to the fair market value of the knife, capped at $250 per item. Just flag it within 48 hours of delivery. We also photograph knives with visible pre-existing damage at pick-up, so there's no ambiguity about condition going in.

These Terms and Conditions ("Agreement") govern your use of knife sharpening and related services ("Services") provided by Upshout LLC, operating as Sharven ("Company," "we," "us," or "our"). By booking a service, creating an account, or using the Services in any way, you agree to be bound by this Agreement.

1. Services

Sharven provides professional knife sharpening services on a subscription or one-time basis. Our standard service includes pick-up of your knives, overnight sharpening (24–48 hour turnaround), and return delivery. A premium loaner set is provided during the sharpening period at no additional charge.

2. Eligibility & Service Area

Services are currently available in selected zip codes in the Princeton and Pennington, NJ area. We reserve the right to expand, modify, or restrict our service area at any time with reasonable notice.

3. Account Registration

You must provide accurate and complete information when creating an account. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activity that occurs under your account.

4. Pricing & Payment

No charge is collected at time of booking. Your card is saved securely via Stripe and charged automatically 3 days after your first pickup. Subscription plans renew automatically on a monthly or biweekly basis. Add-on services (additional knives, scissors) are charged to your card on file after your service visit.

Loyalty benefit: Subscribers who maintain continuous active subscriptions receive their 12th month of service at no charge, applied automatically.

5. Service Appointments & Scheduling

Appointments are scheduled based on route availability. We will make reasonable efforts to honour your preferred time window (morning or afternoon). You may reschedule a visit with at least 24 hours' notice at no charge. Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice may be subject to a cancellation fee. Repeated no-shows may result in suspension of service.

6. Cancellation Policy

You may cancel your subscription at any time through your account portal or by contacting support@upshout.com. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle. No partial refunds are issued for unused portions of a billing period. One-time service bookings are non-refundable once a pick-up has been completed.

7. Your Property & Knife Condition

You retain ownership of your knives at all times. You acknowledge that sharpening is a material-removal process and that repeated sharpening over time will reduce blade width — this is inherent to the service. We will exercise reasonable professional care in handling your knives. We are not responsible for pre-existing damage, defects, or conditions present before pick-up.

8. Loaner Equipment

A premium loaner knife set is provided for use during the sharpening period. You agree to use the loaner equipment with reasonable care and return it promptly when your sharpened knives are delivered. You are responsible for any damage to loaner equipment beyond normal wear. Lost or unreturned loaner knives will be charged at replacement cost.

9. Knife Care & Liability

Sharpened knives are inherently sharp instruments. You assume full responsibility for the safe use, handling, and storage of all knives — both your own and any loaner equipment — once they are in your possession.

SAFE HANDLING & UNPACKING: WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY PERSONAL INJURY, HARM, OR PROPERTY DAMAGE ARISING FROM ANY HANDLING OF KNIVES AT ANY POINT AFTER DELIVERY OR DROP-OFF, INCLUDING INJURY SUSTAINED DURING UNPACKING OR USE.

10. Service Access & Door Drop-Off

Our team will pick up and return knives at your specified address. If you choose to arrange an unattended door drop-off, your knives are considered to be in your possession from the moment they are placed at your door. We will make reasonable efforts to document delivery with a photograph.

WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY LOSS, THEFT, DAMAGE, OR PERSONAL INJURY ARISING FROM OR RELATED TO AN UNATTENDED DROP-OFF FROM THE MOMENT KNIVES ARE PLACED AT YOUR DOOR.

11. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Upshout LLC's total liability to you for any claim arising out of or relating to the Services shall not exceed the total amount paid by you to us in the three (3) months preceding the event giving rise to the claim. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages of any kind.

12. Governing Law

This Agreement is governed by the laws of the State of New Jersey, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any disputes shall be resolved exclusively in the courts of Mercer County, New Jersey.
